Isa 43:2 When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
God
does not open paths for us in advance of our coming.
He does not
promise help before help is needed.
He does not remove obstacles out of
our way before we reach them.
Yet when we are on the edge of our need,
God's hand is stretched out.
Many people forget this,
and are forever worrying about difficulties which they foresee in the
future.
They expect that God is going to make the way plain and open
before them, miles and miles ahead...
Whereas He has promised to do it
only step by step as they may need.
You must get to the waters and into
their floods before you can claim the promise.
Many people dread death,
and lament that they have not "dying grace."
Of course, they will not
have dying grace when they are in good health, in the midst of life's
duties, with death far in advance.
Why should they have it then?
Grace
for duty is what they need then, living grace...
Then dying grace when
they come to die.
~J. R. M.
When thou passest through the waters Deep the waves may be and cold...
But Jehovah is our refuge, And His promise is our hold...
For the Lord Himself hath said it, He, the faithful God and true:
When thou comest to the waters Thou shalt not go down, BUT THROUGH.
Seas of sorrow, seas of trial, Bitterest anguish, fiercest pain...
Rolling surges of temptation Sweeping over heart and brain...
They shall never overflow us For we know His word is true;
All His waves and all His billows He will lead us safely through.
Threatening breakers of destruction, Doubt's insidious undertow, Shall not sink us, shall not drag us Out to ocean depths of woe...
For His promise shall sustain us, Praise the Lord, whose Word is true!
We shall not go down, or under, For He saith, "Thou passest THROUGH."

Revivals Begin With God's Own People!
Revivals Begin With God's Own People
The Holy Spirit touches their heart anew...
And gives them new fervor and compassion...
And zeal, new light and life...
And when He has thus come to you...
He next goes forth to the valley of dry bones...
Oh, what responsibility this lays on the Church of God!
If you grieve Him away from yourselves...
Or hinder His visit...
Then the poor perishing world suffers!

True Consecration
1Sa 3:18 And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.
The heart of consecration is not devotion to this or that kind of service for Christ-but devotion to the Divine will, whatever God may ordain.
It may not be any form of activity-sometimes it is quiet waiting.
Consecration is not bringing a great many souls to Christ, attending a great many religious meetings, or teaching or preaching.
Some weary one, shut away in the darkness in the chamber of pain, may be illustrating True Consecration far more beautifully than those whose hands are fullest of Christian activities in the bustling world.
Consecration is devotion to the will of God.
It is readiness to do, not what we want to do in His service-but what He gives us to do.
Job 1:21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.
Luke 22:42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.
Act 21:14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.
Your way, not mine, O Lord, However dark it be...
Lead me by Your own hand, Choose out the path for me.
I dare not choose my lot, I would not, if I might...
Choose for me, my God, So shall I walk aright.

What A Compassionate, Gracious Arrangement!
Psalm 31:15 My times are in thy hand: deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me.
Why then, need I worry or tremble?
That great, loving, powerful hand keeps all the events of my life sealed and secure within its almighty clasp!
Only He, my Maker and my Master, can permit them to be revealed to me as His will for me.
What a compassionate, gracious arrangement!
How eminently fitted to fulfill that sweet promise of His Word, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You!"
If we fully believed this, we would be absolutely devoid of the worry which corrodes and chafes the daily life of so many professing Christians.
"My times." Not one or two important epochs of my history only-but everything that concerns me...
Joys that I had not expected, sorrows that must have crushed me, if they could have been anticipated, sufferings which might have terrified me by their grimness, had I looked upon them, surprises which infinite love had prepared for me, services of which I could not have imagined myself capable...
All these lay in that mighty hand, as the purposes of God's eternal will for me.
But, as they have developed gradually and silently-how great has been the love which appeared enwrapping and enfolding each one!
Has not the grief been measured-while the gladness has far more abounded?
Have not the comforts and consolations-exceeded the crosses and afflictions?
Have not all things been so arranged, and ordered, and undertaken, and worked out on our behalf-that we can but marvel at the goodness and wisdom of God, in meeting out from that dear hand of His, all the "times" that have passed over us?
You agree with me in all this, do you not, dear reader?
Then I beg you to apply it to your present circumstances, however dark or difficult they may be.
They have come directly from your Father's hand to you, and they are His dear will for you!

Hard Love
John 11:6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
In the forefront of this marvelous chapter stands the affirmation, "Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,"...
As if to teach us that at the very heart and foundation of all God's dealings with us, however dark and mysterious they may be, we must dare to believe in and assert the infinite, unmerited, and unchanging love of God.
Love permits pain.
The sisters never doubted that He would speed at all hazards and stay their brother from death, but, "When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.
What a startling "therefore"! He abstained from going, not because He did not love them, but because He did love them.
His love alone kept Him back from hasting at once to the dear and stricken home.
Anything less than infinite love must have rushed instantly to the relief of those loved and troubled hearts, to stay their grief and to have the luxury of wiping and stanching their tears and causing sorrow and sighing to flee away.
Divine love could alone hold back the impetuosity of the Savior's tender-heartedness until the Angel of Pain had done her work.
Who can estimate how much we owe to suffering and pain?
But for them we should have little scope for many of the chief virtues of the Christian life.
Where were faith, without trial to test it; or patience, with nothing to bear; or experience, without tribulation to develop it?

Loved! then the way will not be drear; For One we know is ever near...
Proving it to our hearts so clear, That we are loved.
Loved when our sky is clouded o'er, And days of sorrow press us sore...
Still we will trust Him evermore, For we are loved.
Time, that affects all things below, Can never change the love He'll show...
The heart of Christ with love will flow, And we are loved.

A Common Faith
I desire that all the children of God, who may read these details, may thereby be led to Increased and more Simple Confidence in God for everything which they may need under any circumstances...
And that these many answers to prayer may encourage them to pray, particularly as regards the conversion of their friends and relatives, their own progress in grace and knowledge, the state of the saints whom they may know personally, the state of the Church of God at large, and the success of the preaching of the gospel.
Especially I affectionately warn them against being led away by the device of Satan to think that these things are peculiar to myself and cannot be enjoyed by all the children of God...
For though every believer is not called upon to establish Orphan Houses, Charity Schools, etc., and trust in the Lord for means, yet all believers are called upon, in the simple confidence of faith, to cast all their burdens upon Him, to trust in Him for everything, and not only to make everything a subject of prayer, but to Expect answers to their petitions that they have asked According To His Will, and in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Think Not, dear reader, that I have the gift of faith, that is, the gift of which we read in 1 Corinthians 12:9 and that is mentioned along with "the gifts of healing," "the working of miracles," "prophecy"--and that on that account I am able to trust in the Lord.
From my
inmost soul I do ascribe it to God alone that He has enabled me to trust in
Him, and that He has not allowed my confidence in Him to fail.
But I thought
it needful to make these remarks, lest anyone should think that my depending
upon God was a special gift given to me, which other saints have no
right to look for; or lest it should be thought that this, my depending upon
Him, had only to do with the obtaining of money by prayer and faith.
By the
grace of God I desire that my faith in God should extend towards
everything: the smallest of my own temporal and spiritual concerns, and
the smallest of the temporal and spiritual concerns of my family, towards
the saints among whom I labor, the Church at large, everything that has to
do with the temporal and spiritual prosperity of my Institution.
Dear
reader, Do Not Think that I have attained in faith (and how much less in
other respects!) to that degree to which I might and ought to attain.
Lastly, let not Satan deceive you in making you think
that you could not have the same faith, but that it is only for people who
are situated as I am.
When I lose such a thing as a key, I ask the Lord
to direct me to it, and I Look For an answer to my prayer.
When a person with whom I have made an appointment does
not come at the fixed time, and I begin to be inconvenienced by it, I ask
the Lord to be pleased to hasten him to me, and I Look For an answer.
When I do not understand a passage of the Word of God, I
lift up my heart to the Lord, that He would be pleased, by His Holy Spirit,
to instruct me--and I Expect to be taught, though I do not fix the time
when, and the manner how, it should be.
When I am going to minister in the Word, I seek help from
the Lord, and while I, in the consciousness of my natural inability as well
as my utter unworthiness, begin this His service, I am not cast down, but of
good cheer, because I look for His assistance and believe that He, for His
dear Son's sake, will help me.
Oh! I beseech you, do not think me an extraordinary
believer, having privileges above other of God's dear children that they
cannot have; nor look on my way of acting as something that would not do for
other believers.
Do but stand still in the hour of
trial--and you will see the help of God, if you trust in Him.
But there is so often a forsaking the ways of the Lord in
the hour of trial, and thus the food of faith, the means whereby our faith
may be increased, is lost.

Satan's Favorite Employee "The Switchman"
Php 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
One of Satan's Favorite employees is the switchman.
He likes nothing better than to Side-Track one of God's express trains, sent on some blessed mission and filled with the fire of a holy purpose.
Something will come up in the pathway of the earnest soul, to attract its attention and occupy its strength and thought.
Sometimes it is a little irritation and provocation.
Sometimes it is some petty grievance we stop to pursue or adjust.
Sometimes it is somebody else's business in which we become interested, and which we feel bound to rectify...
And before we know, we are absorbed in a lot of distracting cares and interests that quite turn us aside from the great purpose of our life.
Perhaps we do not do much harm, but we have missed our connection.
We have got off the main line.
Let all these things alone.
Let grievances come and go, but press forward steadily and irresistibly, crying, as you haste to the goal, "This one thing I do."

Take Everything To God In Prayer
Moment by moment, as it comes to us in life.
This may become a habit the same way all habits are formed...
This may become a habit the same way all habits are formed...
Repeated and constantly attended, moment by moment...
Until that which is at first an act of will becomes spontaneous and second nature.
If we will watch our lives, we shall find that God meets the things that we commit to Him in prayer with special blessing.
He often allows the best things that we have not committed to Him to be ineffectual...
If we will watch our lives, we shall find that God meets the things that we commit to Him in prayer with special blessing.
He often allows the best things that we have not committed to Him to be ineffectual...
Simply to remind us of our dependence upon Him for everything.
It is very gracious and thoughtful of God to compel us gently to remember Him.
He would hold us so close to Himself that we cannot get away for a single minute from His all-sustaining arm.
Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Let us bring our least petitions, Like the incense beaten small...
All our cares, complaints, conditions Jesus loves to bear them all.

Purity Of Heart And Life
Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Purity, even purity of heart, is the main thing to be aimed at.
We need to be made clean within through the Spirit and the Word...
And then we shall be clean without by consecration and obedience.
There is a close connection between the affections and the understanding...
If we love evil we cannot understand that which is good.
If the heart is foul, the eye will be dim.
How can those men see a holy God who love unholy things?
What a privilege it is to see God here!
A glimpse of Him is heaven below!
In Christ Jesus the pure in heart behold the Father.
We see Him, His truth, His love, His purpose, His sovereignty, His covenant character, yea, we see Himself in Christ.
But this is only apprehended as sin is kept out of the heart.
Only those who aim at godliness can cry, "Mine eyes are ever towards the LORD."
The desire of Moses, "I beseech thee, show me thy glory," can only be fulfilled in us as we purify ourselves from all iniquity.
We shall "see him as he is," and "every one that hath this hope in him purifieth himself."
The enjoyment of present fellowship and the hope of the beatific vision are urgent motives for purity of heart and life.
LORD, make us pure in heart that we may see Thee!

Loved To Perfection
John 13:1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
This fact is
essentially a promise; for what our LORD was He is...
And what He was to
those with whom He lived on earth, He will be to all His beloved so long
as the moon endureth.
Having loved: here was the wonder!
That He
should ever have loved men at all is the marvel.
What was there in His
poor disciples that He should love them?
What is there in me?
But when
He has once begun to love, it is His nature to continue to do so.
Love
made the saints "his own" what a choice title!
He purchased them with
blood, and they became His treasure.
Being His own, He will not lose
them.
Being His beloved, He will not cease to love them.
My soul, He
will not cease to love thee!
The text is well as it stands: "to the
end."
Even till His death the ruling passion of love to His own reigned
in His sacred bosom.
It means also to the uttermost.
He could not love
them more: He gave Himself for them.
Some read it, to perfection.
Truly
He lavished upon them a perfect love, in which there was no flaw nor
failure, no unwisdom, no unfaithfulness.
Such is the love of Jesus to
each one of His people.
Let us sing to our Well-beloved a song.

Immediately Present
Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
A help that is not
present when we need it is of small value.
The anchor which is left at
home is of no use to the seaman in the hour of storm...
The money which he
used to have is of no worth to the debtor when a writ is out against
him.
Very few earthly helps could be called "very present"...
They are
usually far in the seeking, far in the using, and farther still when
once used.
But as for the LORD our God, He is present when we seek Him,...
Present when we need Him...
And present when we have already enjoyed His
aid.
He is more than "present," He is very present.
More present than
the nearest friend can be, for He is in us in our trouble...
More present
than we are to ourselves, for sometimes we lack presence of mind.
He is
always present, effectually present, sympathetically present, altogether
present.
He is present now if this is a gloomy season.
Let us rest
ourselves upon Him.
He is our refuge, let us hide in Him...
He is our
strength, let us array ourselves with Him...
He is our help, let us lean
upon Him...
He is our very present help, let us repose in Him now.
We need
not have a moment's care or an instant's fear...
The LORD of hosts is
with us...
The God of Jacob is our refuge.

Forgive And Forget!
Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and He shall save thee (Proverbs 20:22).
Let anger cool down.
Say nothing and do nothing to avenge yourself.
You will be sure to act unwisely if you take up the weapon and fight your own battles...
And, certainly, you will not show the Spirit of the LORD Jesus.
It is nobler to forgive and let the offense pass.
To let an injury fester in your bosom and to meditate revenge is to keep old wounds open and to make new ones.
Better forget and forgive.
Peradventure, you say that you must do something or be a great loser;...
Then do what this morning's promise advises: "Wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee."
This advice will not cost you money but is worth far more, Be calm and quiet.
Wait upon the LORD...
Tell Him your grievance...
Spread Rabshakeh's letter before the LORD, and this of itself will be an ease to your burdened mind.
Besides, there is the promise "He shall save thee."
God will find a way of deliverance for you.
How He will do it neither you nor I can guess, but do it He will...
If the LORD saves you, this will be a deal better than getting into petty quarrels and covering yourself with filth by wrestling with the unclean.
Be no more angry.
Leave your suit with the Judge of all.

If We Knew What Would Happen Tomorrow~We Would Lose Alertness
The next thing that we should lose would be the spirit of vigorous alertness.
And of that we have a kind of parable in what we see in the animals.
Suppose, for instance, that you catch a bird and take it into the safety of your home.
And every day you tend it and feed it until at length it learns that food is certain.
Do you know what happens, although you might not guess it?
Do you know what every naturalist knows?
Every instinct of that little captive is silently but surely being dulled.
Once it was wild and everything was dark.
The bird was at its best when things were dark.
Once it didn't know where its breakfast was when it awoke at dawn and was hungry.
But now it knows - you are its little providence, and you have taught it what will come.
And it is very sweet to have that certainty, but something better than sweetness is departing.
And that is what would happen to you and me could we see the content of tomorrow.
It might be sweet, but what man cares for that if something better than sweetness were to go.
I want a life responsive and alert.
I want to be quick to see and to hear and to seize upon the will of God.
And what I say is, that this fine alertness, which is the mark of progress and of victory, would be more difficult a thousand times were we always certain of tomorrow.
Many of you here have been to London. Well, what happened when you went to London?
Didn't you cover more ground in one day than many a Londoner does in half a year? He knows it all, every street of it, every park of it and every palace.
You are alert because it is unknown.
Or to put it another way, here is a man who has to sail for India in six months. He is home on furlough - he has six months to rest - and he gets so fat that you would hardly know him.
But here is another man, a soldier, who any hour may get his call to active duty, and I tell you that is the man who is alert.
No wandering very far from where his home is.
No laying long plans for a fine summer.
He knows that sooner or later he must go, perhaps tonight.
That man may lose a little as anyone does when he chooses to live the soldier's life.
But he is always fit and always ready, and it is the uncertainty that makes him so.
So is it with the uncertainty of death.
So with the uncertainty of trial.
And it is just the darkness of it all, the feeling that we don't know what may come, that helps us to be watchful every day.

At Wit's End
Are you standing at "Wit's End Corner" Christian, with troubled brow?
Are you thinking of what is before you, And all you are bearing now?
Does all the world seem against you, And you in the battle alone?
Remember...at "Wit's End Corner" Is just where God's power is shown.
Are you standing at "Wit's End Corner," Blinded with wearying pain...
Feeling you cannot endure it, You cannot bear the strain...
Bruised through the constant suffering, Dizzy, and dazed, and numb?
Remember...at "Wit's End Corner" Is where Jesus loves to come.
Are you standing at "Wit's End Corner"?
Your work before you spread, unfinished, And pressing on heart and head...
Longing for strength to do it, Stretching out trembling hands?
Remember...at "Wit's End Corner" The Burden-bearer stands.
Are you standing at "Wit's End Corner"?
Then you're just in the very spot...
To learn the wondrous resources Of Him who faileth not:
No doubt to a brighter pathway Your footsteps will soon be moved...
But only at "Wit's End Corner" Is the "God who is able" proved.
